Today I’m buzzing with creative momentum. I think, because I’ve been injured for weeks now, I’m beginning to go crazy… while also a little bit bored.

Well, to be frank, I am a lot bored. And I am reminding myself… boredom is good for you. Boredom is good for your creative muse. It’s good for your brain. It’s even good for your body.

Boredom feels so unfamiliar and uncomfortable, quite simply because it has been a long time since I’ve been bored. Even though I was fairly intentional about a slower paced summer, I still have been constantly on the move. This last month has been especially full and heavy with scheduling.

After a backpacking trip (sadly, my only one of the summer because the climb up to Lake Ann was my realization that I did indeed have plantar fasciitis), I was craving camping that didn’t require me to aggravate my foot even further. It seemed that car camping would have to do.

Still in the height of summer, I knew the only way to have a chance at getting a camping spot was to go mid-week, so I headed up between Squamish and Whistler, to Cal-Cheak Campground. I’d camped there before, so there was a feeling of familiarity, which helped me to lean into the discomfort of yet another solo adventure.

It was another summer of being single, and once again I was trying to navigate the adventure outdoor lifestyle that in some ways has been so familiar to me my entire life… and in other ways, has been totally alien.

At one point, I realized: I felt much more comfortable stepping on a plane to an unknown country, stepping onto foreign soil, and figuring things out… than I did stepping into the world of backcountry exploration.

This was, unfortunately, an arena of my life in which I was depending on past partners and their years of experience, gear, and knowledge.

Add to that, I spent five weeks dog sitting, which meant that I had another variable to accommodate: little Miss Bonnie (I love her, if you don’t know).

So with a little familiarity tucked into my pocket and a desperate need to get away from Bellingham, off we went.

Off to search for a next home, because over the last weeks I’ve come to the understanding that I have outgrown my Bellingham chapter. With that thought as my compass, I posted in some groups to ask about where I might find what I’m looking for. It resulted in a spontaneous invitation to shoot with a fine art photographer, Kyle Graham. He had originally recommended a location for me to go for some self-portraits, but I didn’t feel the inspiration to go out into the wilderness with my tripod, running back and forth between the camera and the setting.

With a few hours notice, we decided to meet up, and I had the pleasure of modeling and being seen through his lens.

Here are a few images from our spontaneous fine art shoot.
