(1/3) Stages and layers of healing.

“I told you your life in Bellingham is more epic than your life ever was in Sweden.”

The taunt of “I told you so” from a ghost has been echoing in my head.

But how you talk to me is important. Words matter. And I don’t care if my life is “epic.” That word is empty to me. I care if it is authentic and on purpose and in alignment.

When I got into relationship in Bellingham, parts of me began to be erased. There was a facade of open mindedness that lured me in, until it was too late to see the truth. I was no longer allowed to model. I couldn’t have male friends. What I shared online has to be processed through a filter of what was acceptable and “appropriate.” My work was labeled as a cute hobby and not something to be taken seriously.

There is a pattern in my life where it seems that men hold the crushing weight of an unspoken assumption over me that once I get into a partnership, how I show up for online and in the world will change. As if what I shared online is nothing more than bait to lure someone in.

But there is no “in-relationship Savannah.” There is no “single Savannah.”

There is just: Savannah.

Either way, the world is going to see my butt. Sorry. 🤷🏼‍♀️

(This mini series has inspired me to collect memories of my past life, juxtaposed to the PNW life… then vs. now. Both are incredible… these are the sweet contrasts of life. Stayed tuned for parts 2 & 3.)

The most important reason for fitness is so that you can do questionable activities, and successfully navigate your way out of them without dying.

I’m not as fit as I want to be right now, but I am fit enough to underestimate how hard an adventure is going to be, and commit to completion without a plan B.

Like when I accidentally ran 20km in Stockholm. Or like yesterday, when I accidentally pedalled 40km on a vintage bike.

See, I’m a little naive when it comes to bikes. As someone who is used to hiking and walking everywhere, my understanding of a bike is that it brings ease.

Wheels? Basically that means it’s a car. When you have a bike, kilometres don’t matter. You’re invincible. Because: wheels!

Fortunately I survived, but ignorance also delivered a few rain showers. The Stora Alvaret is a barren wasteland (actually it’s something to do with cows and agriculture), which means there is no shelter. None. Nada.

So when the rain started to come, I spent my time doing intervals of pedalling away from the clouds as fast as I could, reattaching the chain to the gears and getting grease all over myself, and surrendering to being wet.

The few times I managed to find lone trees, I hopped under them right as the sky opened up and wind started blowing sideways.

It was almost a successfully minimally damp adventure, until the last 3 minutes before getting to the grocery store — at which point the sky truly opened up and I arrived in front of the doors with water pouring down my legs.

Ah well, adventure complete.

I don’t know what I was originally going to do with the evening, but I spent it consuming calories and scrubbing grease out of clothes with dish soap.

People have asked me before why I am so eager to travel (or whatever else) when they hear stories like this, that are not incredibly fun at the time. But the challenges I encounter (or make for myself) are the ones I remember the most.

And the next day, there is a calm satisfaction that can only come after you do a hard thing.

And of course… art was made.

What do I know on a soul level?

My medicine is love.

My art is nudity.

My tool is self-discipline.

Nourishing creative solitude in the forest with no one but myself… that is my studio.

My camera, a thermos of coffee, my journal.

A very happy place.

And I am finally believing strong enough in myself to know that I don’t have to convince people that this is important work to bring into the world.

To help others heal. To create space for them to celebrate themselves. To heal the world.

I know it is needed and important.

And that is enough.
